Hello Nervous New Grad
WELCOME! You’ve arrived at the reality shock of year one. You’re beyond the honeymoon phase and off orientation and now reality, responsibility, and self doubt are hitting…HARD.
You’re googling:
-
“First year of nursing tips”
-
“How to survive your first year of nursing”
-
“non-hospital nursing positions”
You’re thinking:
“Will this EVER get any easier???”
I see you. I was in your shoes not too long ago...
Man oh man, can I relate to your experience.
I was in your shoes not too long ago...
I know that dazed and confused feeling just wondering if…
-
you chose the right profession
-
you administered that new medication correctly
-
you will survive your first code
-
you are capable of climbing this learning curve
I believe that it doesn’t have to be as scary and overwhelming as the story you are telling yourself. I believe you already have everything within you to transform into a confident and thriving RN.
It's my job to lend you my belief of this truth until you start to believe it yourself.
Together, we'll co-create the right internal conditions so you can thrive even in challenging external circumstances.
I also know that your well-being is the #1 priority. Period.
You know how every airline safety brief says that if the oxygen masks drop, put yours on first before you put one on your child? You might be thinking "Yeah yeah yeah Nell, I've heard that a thousand times"...we've all heard it, but slow down for a second... have you internalized just how important this is?
The same applies to working as a bedside nurse. If you don't prioritize your well-being…you will suffer… AND your patients will suffer. How would your personal and work life shift if you are able to reprioritize yourself? As a nurse you have an inside view of what it looks like when people don't prioritize their well-being. You know… the frequent fliers…. What if over decades of not prioritizing yourself, that becomes you? Those decades start today.
It's Time
It’s time for you to jump into a support system that actually supports.

No more pat on the back and “get back out there” from management.

No more feeling like you have to “be perfect” because of negative self-talk and comparison thinking.
You’ve invested too much time and money into your education to leave nursing because of a poor support system and negative self-talk
This is exactly why I created the...
New Grad Survival Thriving Guide: A 12 week coaching container to bridge the transition from nursing school to bedside nursing.
Created with New Grads in mind, this program starts when you have hit the reality shock phase of your transition. We use transformative nurse coaching to help process major change, reconnect to your inner strengths, and build positive coping mechanisms to bridge the gap in your transition from nursing school to bedside. Because it’s time for you to thrive.
Picture this:
You pull up to work and you’re about to have a crazy shift.
Left and right alarms are beeping, patients are desatting, you haven’t had your morning coffee yet…
And you don’t bat an eye. You take a deep breath. You delegate what you can. You power through the rest. You go to the bathroom to do a quick breathing exercise to reset, and you’re right back at it. Yeah, you took lunch a little late today, but you know that not everyday looks like this.
You feel aligned with the work you do, you say no to picking up extra shifts because you have your finances all figured out and you prioritize self-care, days off and PTO.
You feel:
-
Powerful
-
Like a total bad-a**
-
Like you can trust yourself to figure anything out
-
Ready to take on year two and take on orienting new graduates to offer them more support
What you're experiencing...
... is studied phenomena! Researched performed by Marlene Kramer in 1974 and more recently by Judy Duchscher in 2008 up to the present day have demonstrated the common themes experienced by new graduate nurses as they transition into practice.

Months 3-6 during your first year of nursing are particularly challenging. According to Kramer this phase is the "Shock" phase and for Duchscher it is called the "Being" phase. Beyond those months 3-6, some confidence returns to New Grad Nurses, but smaller waves of anxieties continue to crop up.

Both theorists present similar themes for New Grads' first year. 1. New grad enters workforce in excitement and in a honeymoon era. 2. New grad is hit with a wave of feeling inadequate and sees clearly how different the theoretical world (school) is than the practical world (bedside) 3. New grad either a.) finds support and positive experiences at the bedside to recover through the tough transition or b.) leaves the bedside or nursing profession altogether because of a lack of appropriate and timely support.
This information validates your lived experience and then when we add Transformative Nurse Coaching as a foundation of your support system you feel a shift in being that allows you to ride the wave of transition rather than flounder under the water in transition.

We work through this process together and every time you start to feel stuck or limited I meet you where you're at and ask powerful questions to get to the root of your desire to change or the root of what is standing in your way. In this way, our coaching relationship is completely tailored to you just like you tailor your educating and care plans for each of your individual patients. Using this method empowers you to take charge of your own life and take charge of your first as a nurse. You hop back in the driver's seat rather than just being buckled up and along for the bumpy ride. And don’t worry, I’ll be the nurse in charge of managing the ADPIE here so you can stay focused on showing up fully for yourself.
Slow Down
So often in the busy-ness of life we don't slow down. and ESPECIALLY the busy-ness of nursing. We aren't seen. We aren't heard. We prioritize everyone else's needs before our own.
The safe coaching container we co-create offers you a safe haven, a resting zone, and place to breathe. Oftentimes it is in those moments of slowing down and checking in with yourself that you have the most profound discoveries and growth. Give yourself the gift of slowing down and being seen and heard.
Goals and Accountability
The only person you are accountable to is yourself...AND even though that's true, it often boosts success or habit changes when you let someone know your goals and plans so there's a visible external source of accountability for you! That's me! It's me!
Your "WHY"
You may have heard of internal and external motivators. You've got your positive and negative external motivators to keep showing up to work: paycheck, building up occurrences for calling out sick or being late, relationships with coworkers, your set schedule, etc. And while these are helpful to make sure you keep showing up to work, working a fulfilling job and enjoying what you do truly comes from your internal motivations and mindset. Without your "WHY" you only have external motivators to keep you going and that’s a fast track for burning out. Knowing your "WHY" is crucial to creating successful transformation and growth during your first year as a nurse. And guess what! Your "WHY" is going to evolve and grow with you as you refine your core values and take on your first year as a nurse.
Here's How the Program Works
Holistic Assessment
Refine Focus
Co-Create
Reevaluate
-
We start with a holistic assessment regarding all areas of wellness. Everything gets off kilter when transitioning. Gain clarity of what is the core of your imbalance and how that is contributing to the challenge during this transition.

-
After gaining clarity we’ll refine focus on areas of wellness that need some love (ie career, financial, social, mental, physical, etc) When we narrow the focus and take small steps, larger changes become much more manageable

-
Now the real work and real fun begin. We’ll co-create plans and goals to build the first year of nursing YOU want for yourself. This is where the magic happens. You are the driver and I’ll be your guide. Adventuring and creating the life that works for YOU. This is where the safety of the coaching container is SO important. Space to be vulnerable and feel and then an extra push to grow and evolve.

-
As we continue throughout the New Grad Survival Thriving Guide, we’ll evaluate if we are going in the right direction. If not, we'll course correct and dig deeper to get to the root of your desire to change.
-
Throughout our 12 weeks together you'll also receive timely and personalized pre and post shift pep-talks and debriefs to support you when you need it most.

-
Final result? Healthy mindset, healthy coping mechanisms, work/life balance all on YOUR terms
